Robert began his aikido training at the Japanese Cultural Center in Pasadena, California, then transferred to San Diego Aikikai in 1985 where he became a student of T. K. Chiba (8th dan Shihan). While at San Diego Aikikai, Robert entered the intensive kenshushei instructor training program, which he completed in 1998.
Upon obtaining his teachers certification, Robert became the chief instructor for US Marine Corps Aikikai at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA. A former Marine himself, Burns Sensei introduced Aikido to numerous US Marine Corps and US Navy personnel from 1998 until 2001. In 2001, Robert chose to return to his New England roots and moved back to his original home in Ledyard, CT where he founded Aiki Farms.
